The Power of a Diverse Workforce

At Metaldyne we want to create an atmosphere where everyone is comfortable being themselves. Our cultural diversity program celebrates our diversity globally and is tailored to the needs of each place in which we do business.

Our goal is to take into consideration the complex cultures of each nation and region in which we do business and create a global working culture where different views give rise to new and better ideas that continuously improve our business.

We are a global company, with employees living in 15 countries. In order to work harmoniously we must understand our cultural differences.

We use fun, educational programs to close the culture gaps. Our diversity mascot, a paper-doll-like fictional employee named Diversity Dan, has gone on a world tour of the Asahi Tec and Metaldyne facilities.

In each country, employees took pictures of Dan visiting local landmarks or participating in local traditions. The pictures, along with other souvenirs and written words, were added to a scrapbook and mailed to the next location along with Dan.

After six months of “travel,” we recently received the finished scrapbook. It is an amazing sampling of Metaldyne’s cultural diversity.

Dan had many adventures on his travels. He explored the Black Forest in Germany, celebrated the festival Fallas in Spain, drank traditional green tea in Japan, visited the Great Wall in China and much more.

Dan also learned that there are many local types of food and beverages around the world and employees took pictures of him enjoying them all.

In the spirit of cultural awareness and appreciation, the scrapbook will now be shared online so that all employees can enjoy Dan’s travels and understand a little more about their co-workers around the world.

We live in a small world with big issues. At Metaldyne we believe each of us can make a difference by taking a leadership role in understanding and respecting one other. We know humanity must be part of our culture.
